FRASER VALLEY BANDITS ANNOUNCE SINGLETON AS INTERIM HEAD COACH, JULIUS TO CONTINUE AS GENERAL MANAGER FOR 2021

ABBOTSFORD, BC, March 9, 2021 – The Fraser Valley Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that head coach and general manager, Kyle Julius and 2020 assistant coach David Singleton will be transitioning roles for the upcoming CEBL season.
Julius is currently in his second season of coaching the Formosa Dreamers, a Taiwan-based professional basketball team in the P.LEAGUE+. Given the current conditions and future uncertainty of COVID-19 and its impact on global travel, Julius will remain in Taiwan this summer rather than risk a government ban on re-entry in the fall due to potential COVID restrictions. He will be able to fulfill all duties as the Bandits general manager from Taiwan and support the coaching staff on an on-going basis.
“Although I am disappointed that I can’t be with the team this summer I am really excited for the organization and extremely proud of Coach Dave. He is an elite young coach with a tremendous ability to motivate and bring the best out of his players,” Julius said. “Dave is a proven winner and he has shown he can win in difficult circumstances. He has a great mind on both sides of the ball and there is no question he will carry our grit and grind culture to another level this summer.”
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to stay with the Bandits as general manager,” Julius added. “Even though I am on the other side of the world, I will put my full heart and soul into building another tough-minded group that coach Dave and his staff can lead to competitive greatness.”
Singleton will lead a Bandits team that finished the 2020 CEBL season as runner-up to the Edmonton Stingers and as leaders in several statistical categories, including first in point differential and second in points, steals and assists per game.
Considered to be one of the top young coaches in Asia, Singleton will transition into the head coach position on an interim basis during Julius’ absence and brings a track record of dedication and professionalism that has been developed across a variety of cultural contexts. Singleton’s international coaching pedigree has allowed him to build relationships with players and fellow coaches around the globe.
Singleton joined Bima Perkasa, a professional basketball team playing in the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL), as the club’s head coach in December 2020. Prior to the Bandits and Indonesia, Singleton was head coach and general manager of the Cantho Catfish in the Vietnam Basketball Association (VBA) during its 2016 campaign.
Singleton then joined the Saigon Heat as the lead assistant coach on Julius’ staff in the ABL for two seasons from 2017-2019. Specializing in video coordination and player development, Singleton became the Heat’s head coach for its 2019 VBA campaign and led the team to its first VBA championship. In 2020, Singleton joined Pacific Caesar in the IBL where he led the club to a playoff berth prior to the season being cut short by the pandemic.
In addition to Canada, Indonesia and Vietnam, Singleton also spent time as an assistant coach with the Nelson Giants in New Zealand’s National Basketball League (NBL).
“I’m grateful to Dylan Kular, the Bandits family and the CEBL for this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started in Fraser Valley this summer,” Singleton said. “Kyle has been a mentor to me since our time working together began in Asia. Last season was just the beginning for the Bandits. We are committed to developing a tenacious roster that is equally involved in the community as well.
“Fans can expect a brand of basketball that is fast-paced and requires total buy-in from our players. We will leave it all on the floor each time we step onto the court and we can’t wait to showcase a team for a Fraser Valley community that has been supportive since day one.”
The Bandits are expected to announce Julius and Singleton’s basketball operations department and coaching staff at a later date this spring.
“Dave was an integral piece last year when it came to designing offensive and defensive sets and also showed that he is committed to the improvement of our players not only as athletes but as individuals,” said Bandits vice president Dylan Kular. “Prior to the CEBL Summer Series, our roster connected virtually for nearly five months and was able to unify, adapt and overcome our remote conditions before coming together in St. Catharines. I’m excited for Dave to take the reins this summer with support from an experienced staff of basketball veterans.”
“The Bandits support Kyle and his work with the Dreamers,” Kular added. “We are grateful to be able to maintain an open line of communication with their organization and it was mutually decided that as a result of the difficulty in predicting the nature of restrictions on travel, border closures and other factors resulting from the pandemic, it would be best for Kyle to work remotely for the Bandits this summer.”
The Bandits open the 2021 season at home versus Edmonton on Saturday, June 5 at 1 p.m. PT at Abbotsford Centre. All regular season games will also be live streamed on the free CBC Gem streaming service, cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices and on a new OTT streaming platform the CEBL will unveil this spring.
A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 80 percent of its 2020 rosters being Canadians. Players come from the NBA G League, top international leagues, the Canadian national team program, and top NCAA and U SPORTS programs.

3x3 basketball action will be taking over Guildford Town Centre this Family Day long weekend as the Vancouver Bandits and Basketball BC host 3x3 Clutch. 3x3 Clutch is a joint partnership between BC's professional basketball club and Basketball BC that is designed to increase awareness and interest in 3x3 basketball through collaborative events hosted across British Columbia throughout the calendar year. Set to run Friday, February 13, to Monday, February 16, 3x3 Clutch will welcome nearly 250 young athletes from across the Lower Mainland competing on a custom-built court setup at Guildford Town Centre. Athletes will be competing in the following age groups; Boys U12, U13, U14 and Girls U12, U13. This weekend’s games at 3x3 Clutch are open to the public; spectators are welcome to attend for free as no admission fee will be charged. The Vancouver Bandits, BC’s professional basketball team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), are committed to making a positive impact through basketball and growing the game across British Columbia, and this dedication was highlighted this past week in Kelowna and the Okanagan area. Coming off the recent announcement of Kelowna HOOPFEST, a brand-new basketball festival featuring a CEBL neutral-site home game in partnership with the City of Kelowna, Bandits head coach Kyle Julius spent time at five Okanagan-area secondary schools and both of Kelowna’s post-secondary men’s basketball teams, as part of the Vancouver Bandits third-annual Bandits School Tour. Julius and Bandits staff visited Mount Boucherie Secondary School, Immaculata Regional High School, Okanagan Mission Secondary, Rutland Secondary School and Kelowna Secondary, as well as the men’s basketball teams at UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College, providing dedicated and tailored practices along with motivational talks and training materials. The Vancouver Bandits and the City of Kelowna announced today that the club will host its first neutral-site home game in franchise history when it faces Saskatchewan Professional Basketball Club on Saturday, June 6, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. PT at Prospera Place in Kelowna. This Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) matchup will serve as the marquee event of Kelowna HOOPFEST, a new basketball festival presented in partnership with the City of Kelowna designed to celebrate basketball at every level. Kelowna HOOPFEST will feature the Vancouver Bandits vs. Saskatchewan Professional Basketball Club, a youth 5x5 tournament, a coaching clinic, and additional programming to be announced.  “This is a historic moment for our club and for professional basketball in British Columbia,” said Vancouver Bandits team president Dylan Kular. “We are bringing the same incredible energy our Bandits fans get at Envision Financial Court at Langley Events Centre. The Vancouver Bandits announced that reigning Canadian Player of the Year Tyrese Samuel has re-signed with the club for the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season. Making an immediate impact during his debut CEBL campaign in 2025, Samuel led all players league-wide in field goal percentage (65.9) while finishing top three on the Bandits in points (21.7) and rebounds per game (10.8) in 15 games played. He broke the club’s single-game scoring record during his CEBL debut on May 15, 2025 recording 36 points along with 12 rebounds, and was named CEBL Player of the Week on August 11, 2025. “ We’ve got some unfinished business to take care of ,” said Samuel. The 6-foot-10, Montréal, Que. product capped off his dominant season by being named Canadian Player of the Year and a Second Team All-CEBL selection at the 2025 CEBL Awards . His stellar play also earned him a roster spot with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2025 NBA Summer League and an Exhibit 10 contract with the Phoenix Suns during 2026 NBA training camp. “We are all very excited that we get another chance to work with Tyrese, he is a special player and an even better person. Tyrese is one of the best Canadians to ever play in our league and we are looking forward to building our roster around him,” said head coach and general manager Kyle Julius. The 25-year-old forward has spent the 2025-26 season with the Phoenix Suns’ NBA G League affiliate, Valley Suns, where he has appeared in 24 games and logged 8.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 18.2 minutes played. A top Canadian prospect while in university, Samuel played four seasons at Seton Hall University from 2019 to 2023 before transferring to the University of Florida for his graduate year, where he earned Second Team All-SEC honours. Internationally, Samuel has represented Canada on two occasions, earning a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA U18 AmeriCup and appearing in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup. The Bandits open the 2026 CEBL season on Thursday, May 14 on the road in Saskatchewan before coming home for two exciting matchups as part of 2026 Home Opener Weekend at Envision Financial Court at Langley Events Centre. The club will host the Edmonton Stingers on Friday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT before facing the Calgary Surge on Sunday, May 24 at 5:00 p.m. PT in a rematch of the 2025 CEBL Western Conference Quarterfinal.
