  • Target Score Explanation

The Target Score was created to maintain the flow of a game late in a contest and helps bolster entertainment value by increasing the chances of a comeback and eliminating or reducing clock management or intentional foul scenarios. Best of all, every game features a game-winning basket.

The first time the game clock is stopped with 4:00 minutes or less in the fourth quarter of each game, timed play will end and a target score will be set. The target is established by adding nine (9) points onto the leading team’s score. This becomes the “target score” and the first team to reach it wins the game.

Example: The game score is 80 to 70 when the clock is stopped. The target score is set to 89 points. First team to reach 89 points or greater wins.
