Newby brings scoring, playmaking and leadership to a talented Bandits guard corps.
ABBOTSFORD, B.C., April 9, 2020 –
The Fraser Valley Bandits announced Thursday that they have signed Jabs Newby for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season. Newby turned professional in 2014 and has since played for top-tier clubs in Spain, Mexico and Canada.
A 6-foot-2 guard from Brampton, Ont., Newby attended Mountain State Academy in West Virginia. Mountain State Academy was ranked among the top-30 high school programs in the United States and Newby earned a scout’s grade of 83 according to ESPN and was recruited to play at Eastern Kentucky University, an NCAA Division I school. Newby played two seasons at Eastern Kentucky and averaged 11.8 minutes per game before transferring to Gannon University. Newby’s game continued to develop at Gannon as over two seasons with the Golden Knights he averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game on 45.6 and 35.7 per cent shooting from field goal and three-point range, respectively.
Newby has enjoyed a well-travelled professional career, with stops around the globe. He has suited up among fellow elite Canadian pros at prestigious events like the OVO Bounce and Nike Crown League tournaments in Toronto. This past season Newby starred for UDEA Baloncesto. Over 25 games, Newby averaged 6.2 points, 2.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

I look forward to bringing my aggressive play on both ends of the floor, giving back to the community and being part of a winning culture. Coach Julius believes in toughness, grit and work ethic. I am more than happy to be a part of what we want to accomplish this season,” Newby said.
Newby began his professional career with the Mississauga Power (now the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League) during the 2014-15 season. Current Bandits Head Coach and General Manager Kyle Julius was the Head Coach of the Power at the time and utilized Newby in an up-tempo lineup that catered to Newby’s strengths and athleticism. Newby scored 27 points in his debut for the Power after being acquired from the Saint John Mill Rats. Newby went on to average 5.2 points per game during his rookie campaign and earned NBLC All-Rookie team honours.
“Jabs has carved out an outstanding pro career for himself. I had the opportunity to coach Jabs his rookie year and his motor, toughness and ability to score the ball was great and he has improved every year since,” Julius said. “Jabs is another tough guard who will help on both sides of the ball.”
The Bandits are set to begin their second season in the CEBL this upcoming summer.

The Vancouver Bandits announced Wednesday that single game tickets for all home games for the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League ( CEBL ) season are available for purchase to the public. The Bandits sold-out 75 per cent of regular season home games during the 2025 CEBL season so fans are encouraged to secure their tickets as soon as they can. The Bandits will tip off the home portion of their schedule with a pair of games as part of Home Opener Weekend at Envision Financial Court at Langley Events Centre (LEC). The home opener will be played on Friday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT against the Edmonton Stingers, while the second game will take place on Sunday, May 24 at 5:00 p.m. when the Bandits host the Calgary Surge in a highly-anticipated rematch of the 2025 CEBL Western Conference Quarterfinal. “There is nothing like a Bandits Basketball game. It is high-energy, engaging and, most importantly, it’s for everyone. Vancouver Bandits forward Kur Jongkuch has been called up to the Canadian men’s national team for Window 2 of the FIBA Men’s World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, as announced by Canada Basketball . Originally from Juba, South Sudan before moving to London, Ont. at a young age, this will be Jongkuch’s first-ever call up to Canada's senior men’s national team roster. He was previously named to Canada’s training camp squad for Window 1 of the World Cup Qualifiers in November 2025 , and also competed on Canada’s men’s U23 squad in 2022 where he captured a bronze medal at that year’s GLOBL JAM invitational tournament. Jongkuch has appeared in 36 regular season games across three seasons for the Bandits, averaging 7.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 blocks in seven games played during the 2025 CEBL season. Following his 2025 CEBL season with the Bandits, he signed with Telekom Baskets Bonn of the Basketball Bundesliga, Germany’s top flight and one of the basketball leagues worldwide. Canada, who are ranked fifth in FIBA’s men’s world rankings, will face Puerto Rico on Feb. 26 at 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before travelling to Kingston, Jamaica to take on Jamaica on Mar. 1 at 6:00 p.m ET / 3:00 p.m. PT. Both games will be available to stream live in Canada on TSN+.
Vancouver Bandits forward Mitch Creek has been called up to the Australia men’s national team for the upcoming 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, as announced by Basketball Australia. The reigning CEBL Most Valuable Player and All-CEBL First Team member captained the Bandits during the 2025 season, where he appeared and started in 20 games and averaged 24.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 34.4 minutes played. Following his stellar sophomore campaign with the Bandits, he signed with U-BT Cluj-Napoca in Romania for the 2025-26 season in EuroCup, one of the premier pro basketball leagues in the world. Hailing from Horsham, Victoria, Creek has appeared in 20 games for the Australia Boomers. This call up marks his first appearance for his country since 2019, where he competed at the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. Australia, who are ranked sixth in FIBA's men's world rankings, will face Guam on Thursday, February 26 at 1:00 a.m. PT before taking on the Philippines on Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 a.m. PT.
