Vancouver Bandits Grind Out Road Win Over Niagara River Lions

ST. CATHARINES, ONT., June 10, 2023 – A seismic third quarter helped the Vancouver Bandits earn an 87-78 win over the Niagara River Lions at the Meridian Centre on Saturday night. 


Bandits big man Nick Ward played bully ball in the paint against the CEBL’s reigning defensive player of the year EJ Onu on his way to 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. After an efficient 21 points off the bench on Friday night against Brampton, Ward went 11-of-15 from the floor against Niagara.


“It's all about feeling,” Ward said. “I just got to get the feel of the defence, how they’re defending me and how the refs are calling it.” 


Giorgi Bezhanishvili bounced back from a difficult performance against the Honey Badgers with 14 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in the victory. MJ Walker chipped in with 20 points for the Bandits, including seven in target score time. 


Edward Ekiyor came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for the River Lions on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Reigning CEBL MVP Khalil Ahmad struggled with his shot on Saturday and finished with 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting. However, Ahmad contributed eight assists and three steals in the loss. No other Niagara player reached double figures with Jahvon Blair, Onu and Patrick Whelan all netting eight points. 


“In this league, whoever plays harder usually wins,” Niagara head coach Victor Raso said. “The talent is pretty good across the board and I thought Vancouver played with the desperation that we needed to play with.” 


The Bandits kept pace with their league-best rebounding average by hauling in 51 during Saturday’s contest – 17 more than the River Lions. Vancouver shot 47 per cent from the field in the victory including an improved 32 per cent from three.


The Bandits won despite 19 turnovers and shooting 57 per cent at the free-throw line. 


Meanwhile, Niagara’s offence shot 38 per cent from the field, 22 per cent from three and 95 per cent from the line. 


“I thought we played really well on a back-to-back since we were really terrible last night,” Vancouver head coach Kyle Julius said. “Overall, I can see that there's something in that locker room, there's something there that we can really build on.”


The first quarter saw Ward impose his will on the River Lions at both ends. The big man started with a lefty hook, a mid-range jumper, a drop-step finish, a putback tip, a block and two assists. The Bandits took a 20-13 lead into the second quarter, powered by Ward's performance. 


Vancouver scored a pair of quick buckets to begin the second and forced the River Lions into a timeout. Bezhanishvili helped the Bandits extend their lead to 10 points with a trio of pick-and-roll finishes but Niagara fought back with a 10-0 run to tie the game. Ward completed a putback and hit a free throw to regain a three-point lead for Vancouver, but Onu hammered home an alley-oop to close the quarter. The Bandits carried a narrow 36-35 lead into halftime. 


Both teams struggled from long range in the first half at below 20 per cent, but the Bandits shot 44 per cent overall through 20 minutes. 


The River Lions went three and a half minutes without a field goal to start the third quarter and the duo of Ward and Malcolm Duvivier fueled Vancouver to a 10-0 run. 


Niagara went on an 11-3 run to start the fourth and cut into the Bandits’ lead. Ward continued to succeed inside against Onu, but the River Lions caught fire from three and went on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits. The Bandits went into target score time with a 77-72 lead. 


Walker slashed to the hoop and got the shooter’s roll on a three to score the Bandits’ first five points of target score time. Niagara hit four consecutive free throws to cut the lead back down to six points, but Walker hit another jumper to put the Bandits one bucket away from victory. 


Duane Notice drilled the open wing three to win the game for Vancouver. Niagara drops to 2-4 on the season, while Vancouver improves their record to 2-4.


The Bandits will continue their road trip on Wednesday, June 14 at 6 p.m. PT against the Calgary Surge.


Vancouver’s next home game is Saturday, June 17 when the Saskatchewan Rattlers visit Langley Events Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. Single game tickets for the fifth season of Bandits Basketball are available for purchase at this link.

Mitch Creek called up to Australia men's national team for 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers

Vancouver Bandits forward Mitch Creek has been called up to the Australia men’s national team for the upcoming 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, as announced by Basketball Australia. The reigning CEBL Most Valuable Player and All-CEBL First Team member captained the Bandits during the 2025 season, where he appeared and started in 20 games and averaged 24.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 34.4 minutes played. Following his stellar sophomore campaign with the Bandits, he signed with U-BT Cluj-Napoca in Romania for the 2025-26 season in EuroCup, one of the premier pro basketball leagues in the world. Hailing from Horsham, Victoria, Creek has appeared in 20 games for the Australia Boomers. This call up marks his first appearance for his country since 2019, where he competed at the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. Australia, who are ranked sixth in FIBA's men's world rankings, will face Guam on Thursday, February 26 at 1:00 a.m. PT before taking on the Philippines on Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 a.m. PT.

3x3 Basketball Action Lands at Guildford Town Centre this Family Day weekend

3x3 basketball action will be taking over Guildford Town Centre this Family Day long weekend as the Vancouver Bandits and Basketball BC host 3x3 Clutch. 3x3 Clutch is a joint partnership between BC's professional basketball club and Basketball BC that is designed to increase awareness and interest in 3x3 basketball through collaborative events hosted across British Columbia throughout the calendar year. Set to run Friday, February 13, to Monday, February 16, 3x3 Clutch will welcome nearly 250 young athletes from across the Lower Mainland competing on a custom-built court setup at Guildford Town Centre. Athletes will be competing in the following age groups; Boys U12, U13, U14 and Girls U12, U13. This weekend’s games at 3x3 Clutch are open to the public; spectators are welcome to attend for free as no admission fee will be charged. This upcoming 3x3 Clutch event will mark the first time that a 3x3 basketball tournament will be held inside a shopping centre in British Columbia, following in the footsteps of recent 3x3 basketball events in Canada including in Edmonton during Summer 2025. “Hosting the first-ever 3x3 basketball tournament inside a shopping centre in British Columbia speaks to how creative and accessible this sport can be. Vancouver Bandits make impactful community visits in the Okanagan

The Vancouver Bandits, BC’s professional basketball team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), are committed to making a positive impact through basketball and growing the game across British Columbia, and this dedication was highlighted this past week in Kelowna and the Okanagan area. Coming off the recent announcement of Kelowna HOOPFEST, a brand-new basketball festival featuring a CEBL neutral-site home game in partnership with the City of Kelowna, Bandits head coach Kyle Julius spent time at five Okanagan-area secondary schools and both of Kelowna’s post-secondary men’s basketball teams, as part of the Vancouver Bandits third-annual Bandits School Tour. Julius and Bandits staff visited Mount Boucherie Secondary School, Immaculata Regional High School, Okanagan Mission Secondary, Rutland Secondary School and Kelowna Secondary, as well as the men’s basketball teams at UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College, providing dedicated and tailored practices along with motivational talks and training materials. The Vancouver Bandits and the City of Kelowna announced today that the club will host its first neutral-site home game in franchise history when it faces Saskatchewan Professional Basketball Club on Saturday, June 6, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. PT at Prospera Place in Kelowna. This Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) matchup will serve as the marquee event of Kelowna HOOPFEST, a new basketball festival presented in partnership with the City of Kelowna designed to celebrate basketball at every level.
