Bandits Development Players Maillet, Maffia named U SPORTS National Champions with Victoria
Current and former Bandits earned Canadian university basketball's top trophy

Vancouver Bandits development players Sam Maillet and Diego Maffia raised the W.P. McGee Trophy as U SPORTS Men’s Basketball national champions on Sunday, March 16 at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver. After coming short in the championship final in 2024, the University of Victoria Vikes captured the school’s first national title since 1997 and ninth overall in program history.
The U SPORTS Final 8 serves as the biggest event on the Canadian university basketball calendar and began on Friday, March 13, with the No. 4 seeded Vikes defeating Bishop’s University 85-73 in the quarter finals and Queen’s University 107-98 in the semi finals. The championship game featured a Canada West finals rematch as the Vikes and No. 2 seed University of Calgary Dinos battled for collegiate supremacy. The Vikes came out victorious with a commanding 82-53 victory with Maillet being named Tournament MVP.
Maillet appeared in all three Final 8 games for the Vikes, averaging 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 31.0 minutes played. The native of Moncton, N.B. spent five seasons at Dalhousie University before making the move west for his graduate year. Maffia, a former U SPORTS Player of the Year, was the Vikes leading scorer during the 2024-25 season, averaging 21.1 points per game before being sidelined by an ACL injury in January. He was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) in the 2023 CEBL U SPORTS Draft by Vancouver.
The roster also featured former development player Geoffrey James and former player Murphy Burnatowski, both on the Bandits squad during the 2022 CEBL season. The 2024-25 season was Burnatowski’s debut campaign as Vikes head coach, and first-ever head coaching role, and led the program to an undefeated regular season and garnered U SPORTS Coach of the Year accolades. James recorded 17 points and five assists in the championship game and was named to the U SPORTS All-Tournament team.
Maillet, Maffia, James and Burnatowski join two other former members of the Bandits organization who have won a U SPORTS men’s basketball national championship previously in their basketball careers:
2010: University of Saskatchewan
- Troy Gottselig (Fraser Valley Bandits, 2019)
- Named U SPORTS men’s basketball Tournament MVP
2016, 2017: Carleton University
- Ryan Ejim (Fraser Valley Bandits, 2021)
