3 KEYS TO THE GAME - JULY 25 VS. NIAGARA
Fraser Valley looks to avenge July 3 loss against Ontario rivals.

Three Towers

The dust has settled after the Bandits ended their losing streak last Sunday. The team put a major emphasis on pounding the ball inside with their starting big men, Thomas Kennedy
and James Karnik. The BlackJacks looked defeated by the fourth quarter and were unwilling to battle the bigs for position. The Bandits got any shot they wanted inside and out.
How long will the Bandits continue to play the big men together will be something to follow. James Karnik to this point has been adequate from three-point distance, becoming a true
inside-out threat at the four position. His versatility allows Kennedy to be the team's true five.
An exciting element to follow is Brandon Gilbeck, who has seen limited minutes due to foul
trouble after returning to the Bandits late this season as the reigning 2021 CEBL defensive player of the year. If Gilbeck can find his rhythm and stay out of foul trouble, look out.
Pass First
Marek Klassen had his best game against the Ottawa BlackJacks last Sunday, scoring only seven points but more importantly dropping 10 dimes to lead the team. In head coach Mike
Taylor’s offence, the point guard needs to be the conductor, incorporating the other four players in the right type of symphony.
It is a selfless act, but it is important for all the wings and the bigs to feel involved offensively. This will have a positive effect across the board: The bigs will protect the rim and rebound at
a higher clip. The guards will communicate and go all out defensively.
When the offence has sputtered this season, Klassen and Kyle Adnam have looked for their shot too often which has caused the other players to go full iso when they finally get an
opportunity. This hurts the team in terms of its overall efficiency and makes the Bandits much easier to guard as four players stand around watching one guy dribble out the possession.
An Inside Job
Guarding Khalil Ahmad went completely sideways last time these two teams met. Ahmad was allowed to find an early rhythm offensively. He was not challenged and was able to
operate in whatever area he liked. All of his shots were either perfect or half way down. The defence on Ahmad felt lucky rather than purposeful and in Elam time the CEBL’s MVP front
runner decimated the Bandits.
Tonight, I expect the Bandits to extend his catches whenever possible, making the dynamic guard start his move further from the basket. Some timely double teams would also get the
ball out of his hands and force other River Lions into less comfortable spots.
It will take all five defenders to guard Ahmad, a key that is easier said than done but of massive importance as the Bandits look to inch closer to locking in a high playoff seed in this
pivotal Monday night matchup.
