3 KEYS TO THE GAME - JULY 17

Matchups!
The Blackjacks took care of business versus the Bandits just a few days ago with a convincing twenty one point thrashing. The key in the game was the unleashing of the Blackjacks most dynamic guard/forwards Deng Adel. Adel had twenty seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists and looked unstoppable at times. The Bandits covered him in a variety ways, none with any effectiveness.
On Sunday I would expect the Bandits to try and wear out the giant guard by posting him up early and often. Crashing the glass and making him block out and try to keep him in front, making him a shooter rather than playmaker in the paint. Thomas Kennedy could draw the assignment early with Alex Campbell taking a turn late to take out one of the league's most versatile players.
The Secret Sauce
How do the Bandits end their current three game slide? The answer might be that the team still hasn’t found the right rotation come playoff time. Storming to form.
James Karnick replaced Thomas Kennedy mid season because the Usports big man was called to action to play for our U23 national team. Karnick has proven that when he’s motivated to do the dirty work he's a prototypical big man in the CEBL. But can both the big men play together now that Kennedy is back?
Integrating Brandon Gilbeck back is also important because of his ability to guard a seven footer and be a rim protector. Which big will work best playing with him? What big will have to sit for the betterment of the team's rotation. Figuring out the right combinations will be critical if the Bandits hope to end their current three game slide and glide into playoffs with momentum.
Communication Breakdown
Ball screen Strategy is the focal point of every team in the CEBL. Now that the team has an entire cavalry of bigs with a variety of skill sets, the team could look to solidify their coverage moving forward.
Both James Karnick and Brandon Gilbeck thrive protecting the paint with their physicality and shot blocking prowess. Coach Mike Taylor will most likely keep them there so they can avoid foul trouble and getting exposed against smaller guards. They will likely be in a weak or ice coverage that keeps them close to the rim. The guards with the help of their bigs communication could avoid being screened to eliminate the advantage all together.
Murphy Burnatowski and Thomas Kennedy have shown that they can be more versatile defending in space. They can switch onto smaller guards based on their threat level and if the guard is an elite scorer, they can double team forcing the ball out of the threats hands.
The communication from these four bigs will be critical moving forward if the Bandits hope to take out the Blackjacks on Sunday.
