KEY TO THE GAME - JULY 15 VS. Guelph

The Secret
In the “Book of Basketball”, author Bill Simmons called the key to winning basketball “The Secret.” It’s when a group of individuals come together to focus on winning, sacrificing individual stats to do so. On the recent two game slide, the Bandits seem to be focussed on their own individual success which has hurt the team as a whole.
When the game is in the balance like it was the other night against Montréal, the Bandits played selfish, iso-centric basketball, trying to win the game with one shot. At the beginning of the season the team hunted for the best shot on almost every possession. If that good early look wasn’t available, Shane Gibson or Alex Campbell would rescue the possession with a late pick and roll, or Murphy Burnatowski would hit a timely three. The team has lost this rhythm.
Many of the team's role players have taken early one-pass threes when the possession clearly called for an inside touch or drive and kick. The team should have an inside-out focus every night and I am sure they do. Throw the ball in the post, drive and kick, attack the rim and crash the glass.
Role definition could help. Recently the Bandits have added both local hero Marek Klassen and reigning defensive player of the year Brandon Gilbeck. This is clearly the deepest roster in the league, but the team is clearly still storming, fighting against conformity. We, not me.
This is the secret to the Bandits' success. Curb your stats and fight for the best shot for the team. Play with the confidence that your stats won’t define your next pro contract. The team’s success is the only thing that matters and to beat the Nighthawks this is the only KEY that matters.
A return home to friendly confines of the Langley Events Centre and a few key days of practice is just what the doctor ordered for this unit as they fight to clinch a playoff spot on Friday night.
