Current British national team member and former Long Island University standout guard signs with Fraser Valley ahead of the team’s second season

ABBOTSFORD, B.C., Feb. 18, 2020 – The Fraser Valley Bandits announced Tuesday the signing of Kyle Johnson. Johnson played four years of NCAA Division I basketball for Long Island University from 2007 to 2011 before embarking upon a professional playing career that has taken him around the globe.


The 6-foot-4 guard from Scarborough, Ont. has played professionally in France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and is currently enjoying a stellar season for Stjarnan. Johnson is posting averages of 15 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game on 48.3 and 35.4% shooting from field goal and three‑point range, respectively.

“Having played in some of Europe’s top professional leagues and representing Great Britain at some of the highest international competitions, I am excited to come home to Canada this summer and continue my professional career in British Columbia,” Johnson said.

“Coach Julius, his staff, and the entire front office are committed to winning and building a culture for a team that is a family, both on and off the court. I look forward to contributing to the progression of the team and making meaningful connections with the Fraser Valley community.”

In addition to representing Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Johnson is known by coaches and teammates as a consummate leader, both on and off the court who brings two‑way play and a competitive spirit to the locker room.

One of the most notable performances of Johnson’s career was when he scored 51 points on 17-of-22 shooting for the London Lightning in 2017, who were then coached by current Bandits Head Coach and General Manager Kyle Julius. Johnson becomes the first official player signing of Julius’ tenure with the Bandits.

“Kyle Johnson is a special basketball player and an even better person. KJ was a major piece to our championship team in London three years ago where his leadership and shot making was dependable night in and night out. KJ is a world-class shooter and has the ability to guard multiple positions. KJ is the perfect player to build our culture around,” Julius said.


The Bandits begin their second season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) on Friday, May 8 when the club takes on the defending CEBL Champions, the Saskatchewan Rattlers, at Abbotsford Centre. Season tickets are on sale now at thebandits.ca and on Ticketmaster.

Largest Annual Indigenous Sports Gathering in British Columbia Coming to Langley - 2026 Junior All Native Basketball Tournament

The Vancouver Bandits, Bandits Community Foundation, Vancity Nation Basketball and Kwantlen First Nation are proud to host the 2026 BC Junior All Native basketball tournament, taking place March 15-20, 2026 in Langley, BC. The Junior All Native Tournament (JANT) is the largest Indigenous youth sports gathering in British Columbia and one of the biggest basketball tournaments in Canada, drawing over 1,200 youth athletes, over 10,000 travellers and over 100 teams from across the province. Additionally, more than 100 Indigenous communities will be attending and represented at the annual tournament. “Vancity Nation is proud to partner with Kwantlen First Nation, Bandits Community Foundation and Vancouver Bandits to bring JANT to Langley,” said Nicole Cardinal, team manager of Vancity Nation basketball club. ”This is an opportunity for Vancity Nation to showcase our urban youth who live away from their communities and play a sport they love with Indigenous youth from across BC. Vancity Nation is made of volunteer coaches and managers who provide low cost basketball opportunities for our youth, and together we hope we build pathways that strengthen identity, and community connection. This goes a long way in raising young, productive leaders in a sport they love.” Langley Events Centre will serve as the tournament’s primary venue, hosting the opening ceremony on March 15 and championship games on March 20. Games will also be played at venues that include RE Mountain Secondary, Langley Secondary, Walnut Grove Secondary, Peter Ewart Middle and Yorkson Creek Middle schools in Langley. The 2026 edition of the tournament marks the first time in eight years that the event has been hosted in the Lower Mainland, with the last occurrence in 2018 hosted at North Vancouver’s Capilano University. “On behalf of Vancouver Bandits and Bandits Community Foundation, we are honoured to serve as custodians of the 2026 BC Junior All Native basketball tournament while standing side-by-side with Kwantlen First Nation and VanCity Nation Basketball. Bandits Forward Tyrese Samuel Signs Exhibit 10 Contract With Phoenix Suns for 2025 NBA Training Camp

Vancouver Bandits forward Tyrese Samuel has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Phoenix Suns and was named to the club’s 21-player training camp roster. The news was announced by the Suns on social media and the club’s website in a release . Introduced in the NBA’s 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Exhibit 10 contracts are one-year deals. They can include a potential bonus if the player spends time with the team’s G League affiliate. Samuel is expected to practice and compete with the Suns during the 2025-26 Training Camp and preseason from October 3rd to 14th, which will feature four games including two matchups played in Macau as part of the NBA China Games series. The reigning CEBL Canadian Player of the Year and CEBL First Team All Star, Samuel was an integral member for the Bandits, appearing in and starting in 16 games. Establishing himself as a dominant presence, Samuel finished second in the CEBL in scoring with 24.4 points per game, ranked third in three-point percentage (48.6%), and fourth in field goal percentage (58.4%).

Bandits Partner With Vancouver Park Board to Refurbish Outdoor Basketball Court at Grays Park

The Vancouver Bandits announced Wednesday that the club has partnered with the Vancouver Park Board, Bandits Community Foundation and Little Legends Foundation to support the refurbishment of an outdoor basketball court at Grays Park in South Vancouver. The refreshed court will be unveiled this fall as part of an official launch event in collaboration between the Vancouver Bandits, Vancouver Park Board, Bandits Community Foundation and Little Legends Foundation. The court refurbishment project is part of the Bandits Community Foundation’s Court Projects program that enhances outdoor basketball courts across British Columbia, including most recently a court refurbishment in partnership with City of Pitt Meadows in September of 2024. “Building a world class basketball court in this community has been a long time dream. Thanks to our partners at the Vancouver Bandits, Bandits Community Foundation and Vancouver Park Board for coming together to make this project happen - there are a number of incredible donors we are going to announce in the coming weeks,” said Little Legends Foundation founder Spensir Sangara. “Grays Park was the perfect place for Court Projects, the basketball culture here is strong and connected. The legacy goes beyond the refurbishment where, with Vancouver Bandits and Bandits Community Foundation, we are going to host free youth camps and The Legendary Tournament at Grays Park starting in 2026.” The partnership was sparked in 2023 when Sangara expressed interest in building a basketball court for the South Vancouver community. Around the same time, the Bandits Community Foundation had completed a similar project in Pitt Meadows with the City of Pitt Meadows, creating a natural alignment between the two organizations. “Basketball has the power to bring people together, and this project is about more than just a court - it is about creating a safe, vibrant space where young people and families can connect, play, and grow,” said Vancouver Bandits team president Dylan Kular. “We are proud to work through Court Projects with our partners in the Vancouver Park Board, Bandits Community Foundation, and Little Legends Foundation to invest in South Vancouver and to use sport as a tool for building resilience, unity, and positive change in the community.” The court refurbishment at Grays Park, located at 4850 St. Catherines Street in Vancouver, includes upgrades to the basketball hoops, playing area resurfacing and seating areas. Grays Park was identified as one of Vancouver’s most active outdoor basketball spaces, and community feedback strongly supported the refurbishment. "It has been amazing to see the local community come together with the Vancouver Bandits to upgrade this beloved neighbourhood court," says Vancouver Park Board Chair Laura Christensen. "Strategic partnerships like this allow us to deliver so much public benefit for our residents.
