Vancouver Bandits Team Up With Westland Insurance and Kw’umut Lelum To Host Basketball Camp For Indigenous Youth On Vancouver Island

NANAIMO, BC, September 27, 2023 – The Vancouver Bandits partnered with Westland Insurance and Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services to host a youth basketball camp at Snuneymuxw First Nation on Vancouver Island.
The camp took place on Sept. 27 and was open to boys and girls. More than 30 Indigenous youth from the community participated in the free-to-attend event that featured two instructional skills sessions led by former Canadian senior men’s national team forward and Bandits alumni Levon Kendall.
Kendall retired from professional play following the 2021 Canadian Elite Basketball Season (CEBL) season and has served as an assistant coach on the Bandits’ staff since the 2022 CEBL campaign.
Multiple volunteers from Westland Insurance were in attendance to support the camp and help Kendall run drills and activities with local youth.
"We're proud to continue our partnership with the Vancouver Bandits and Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services," says Cari Watson, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Client Experience for Westland Insurance.
"At Westland, our core values of diversity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. Through this collaboration, we're excited to not only support the Bandits' community projects, but to also foster an inclusive and empowering environment for Indigenous youth on Vancouver Island. It's a true privilege to be a part of significant projects like these and we look forward to making a lasting impact together."
The camp is the latest installment in Westland Insurance’s commitment toward enhancing the Bandits’ community projects. Since 2022, Westland has sponsored the annual Indigenous youth basketball camp hosted by the Bandits as part of the club’s ongoing partnership with the
Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I∙SPARC). The partnership is showcased each summer at the
BC Basketball Festival when more than 50 Indigenous youth come to Langley Events Centre for fundamental basketball instruction hosted by the Bandits’ coaching staff.
Since 2022, the goal of the Collective has been to create increased opportunities for Indigenous players, coaches and others involved in basketball to participate in training camps, competitions, workshops and more.
Rikki Wylie, prevention services manager at Kw’umut Lelum, helped organize the camp, which was hosted at Snuneymuxw First Nation’s recreation centre.
“There is a thriving basketball ecosystem on Vancouver Island and we are grateful for the chance to be invited to Snuneymuxw First Nation to connect with young and aspiring basketball players by creating an opportunity to play with their peers and learn new skills from one of our decorated Bandits alumni,” Bandits team president Dylan Kular said.
