3 KEYS TO THE GAME - TUESDAY, JUNE 7

They Put the D in Bandit
The current incarnation of the Fraser Valley Bandits has all the makings of a Kyle Julius
roster. Effort and defensive versatility are non negotiable qualities that our GM looks for. On
Saturday versus the Rattlers, Murphy Burnatowski, Maxie Esho and Thomas Kennedy
guarded ball screens in a variety of ways. They hard showed on side pick and rolls almost
trapping the ball carrier. They shocked and recovered for a stretch which took the Rattlers
guards out of rhythm by forcing their initial dribble drive away from the basket. The bigs effort
was infectious and the guards fed off it. Hitting the floor, charges and constant contests,
these Bandits don’t quit and will hope to keep the Honey Badgers guessing Tuesday
morning at the Langley Events Centre.
Spursesque
Smart players, smart coaching and buy in. The Bandits countered the Rattlers to death on
Saturday. In transition the ball flew around the floor, and no player held for longer than
second. 0.5 mentality is when a player makes a quick decision to drive, shoot or pass which
doesn’t allow the defence to set and lid up to the ball. But this mentality is not limited to just
transition. The Bandits are running multiple series that have several counters built into each
action. Because of this mentality, driving lanes and open shots are rampant. It also helps the
Murphy Burnatowski is white hot. Nevertheless, this mindset makes for great basketball.
Every player is a threat, and every spot has to be guarded. Coach Pop would be proud.
The Role Man
Thomas Kennedy has emerged as the team's starting center playing the majority of the
minutes over the past three games. With a bounce in his step and a relentless effort that
finds our big man in the right spot at the right time more often than not every space on the
floor has to be defended. Kennedy’s ability at the rim has put teams like Rattlers in a bind
because of the four surrounding shooters on the floor. Who do you rotate a help defender
off? So far teams have chosen to help off of Murphy, and Murphy’s law so far has made
these teams pay for their choice. Burnatowski is simply on fire, and the other Bandit shooters
are pretty good in their own right leaving a gaping hole in the paint for our roll man. It’s all
coming together offensively for the Bandits right now, it will be interesting to see how Honey
Badgers deal with this dilemma Tuesday at the LEC.
