3 KEYS TO THE GAME - JULY 8 VS. OTTAWA
Fraser Valley looks to cool off resurgent BlackJacks.

Hero Ball
Shane Gibson has established himself as one of the best isolation scorers in the CEBL this season. The other night versus the Growlers, Gibson single handedly dismantled any defender that was put on him. Scoring twenty five in the second half alone, Gibson took on defenders off the dribble, slashed to the basket versus closeouts and contorted his body to finish at the rim versus the Growlers’ rim protectors.
My worry is a simple one. Too many possessions started and finished with Gibson. It is hard to critique a man who put up that type of second half performance, but I think as the league begins to key in on him, he needs to be flexible to adjust to the added attention. Can Gibson make the right decision consistently? Can Shane make his teammates better? Gibson has proven to be a facilitator before and when the pressure in the form of double teams comes, he will need to prove it again. Time will tell Friday versus the BlackJacks.
Grudge Match
Friday’s tilt marks the first time that the Bandits will face-off against former Fraser Valley guard, Kadre Gray, who debuted for Ottawa in their July 6 blowout win against Saskatchewan. The former Laurentian Voyageur scored six points and collected five assists in his first game back with the BlackJacks – Gray made his CEBL debut last season with Ottawa in 2021 before signing with the Bandits during the offseason.
As a former U SPORTS player of the year and member of the Canadian senior men’s national team program, Gray is known for scoring in bunches and the Bandits’ ability to contain his outbursts will be key on Friday night.
U-Turn
The Blackjacks have made a drastic turnaround in their last three games. They were down by as many as 25 points versus the Shooting Stars and came back and stole the game in Elam time by playing great defence and getting balanced contributions from several guys on the roster. Versus the Honey Badgers, the league's best defensive team, the BlackJacks were right there, giving themselves a chance to win. After yesterday's 51 point win against the Saskatchewan Rattlers, one of the most lopsided wins in league history, the BlackJacks are playing their best basketball of the season.
To get the job done on Friday, the Bandits will need to have a great start, putting pressure on the BlackJacks to play from behind. When they make their runs I expect the Bandits to lean heavily on their inside trio of Maxie Esho and James Karnik, with kick-outs to Murphy Burnatowski on the wing. Nothing fuels a run more than quick outside shots and the BlackJacks have proven that they can climb back if the team they are playing settles offensively.
